Martian talk and Venusian talk
Yeah i was in camp tecumseh for a couple of days 2 weeks ago for a leadership camp. It thought me more than just leadership, but also some interesting things:
1) Man-man/Woman-woman communication and how they differ
2) Diversity
3) Ethical dilemma
4) My personality, according to Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
1) Man-man/Woman-woman communication and how they differ
We communicate every day but sometimes we fail to realize the difference between how a man talks and how a woman talks. These are all general facts and can be applied to most people:
a) Men like to engage in competitive conversations.
(Guy A boasts he's studying under a scholarship and Guy B replies he's doing CO-OP and earning $3500 per month now and although he will be graduating one year later but he will be loaded with industrial experiences)
b) Women like to relate to each other
(Girl A tells Girl B how she hates the pimples on her face and how she got so many junk mails every day and Girl B says she has pimples problems too and her e-mail is overflooded with useless junk mails also. Then they will search for solutions together)
c) Men like to banter and joke and call each other names for fun (ie you fatso hahaha) and if they get into fights, the next day they might be having lunch together again
d) Women do not invent names for fun; they think it's an insult (ie you fatso *whack!*) and if they get into fights, they might never be friends for a certain time, or forever.
e) Men avoid eye contact when they talk, and they talk more personal stuffs when they are doing other things at the same time, ie painting a fence, sitting in the bar drinking and watching football game. Girls always think it's disrespectful and lack concern to what they are talking.
f) Women must have eye to eye contact when they talk, and they can talk personal stuffs easier when there's nothing to distract them. Guys are always baffled what makes girl-talk at least an hour or more.
g) Men talk in an orderly manner (issue A first, then issue B, then issue C) and most topics won't last longer than 15 minutes.
h) Women talk in a storytelling manner (issue A first, then issue B, then elaboration on A, then issue C, then link back to conclusion B) and most topics can be dissected and discussed in the most thoroughly manner.
When guys talk to girls they tend to use the same method as they did with his friends, and vice versa. Realize that guys talking without looking at you doesn't mean he's not disrespecting you or not paying attention. Realize that girls must sit down and talk without distractions and she's not wasting your time doing nothing else while talking. Realize that guys switching the conversation topic after a while doesn't mean he's bored talking to you. Realize that girls elaborating on her conversation topic for hours doesn't mean nagging or annoying you. If we understand the communication pattern of the opposite gender then maybe we can relate, compromise and understand each other better.
