Paranoia of a Leftie

P9110015.jpg

I am left-handed. It never bothers me being a leftie at all. You know, every morning, you wake up and go to bathroom to relief yourself, finding that the flush is on the right side.

(US is different. The toilet flushes are all on the left side. Did you guys notice that? US must have many leftie toilet bowl makers. It's either that or they want to be different from the rest of the world.)

Anyway, i'm not fussed up about toilet flushes. Or ballpoint pens for that matter. Or seats with only right side platforms to write on in lecture halls. Or most door handles. Or buttons on most lifts. Or certain fruit peelers. Or chinese calligraphy. They are all petty things to learn how to make use of my right hand. But THIS - i cannot sit still upon seeing it:

"Several findings suggest that lefthandedness may be associated with reduced longevity. For instance, Porac and Coren reported that 13 per cent of 20-year-olds are lefthanded but only 5 per cent of those in their fifties and virtually nobody of 80 or above. We believe that this absence of left-handers from the oldest age groups reflects higher biological and environmental risk." Taken from this source.

Holy Camowly! Since when being a leftie can shorten my life!?! Based upon a paper published in Nature in 1988 (hmm.. that's quite old), researchers suggested some possible causes for this catasthrophic phenomena:

(1) prenatal and perinatal birth stressors are more probable in left-handers;

(2) the immune systems of lefthanders may be reduced by genetic effects and intra-uterine hormones; and

(3) left-handers may suffer more accidents in a world designed for righthanders!

Hmm.. I'm not sure about reason no 1.. Ma, was I in anyway born abnormal? reason no. 2 might explain why i cannot stand weather coldness and also my nasal problems in the morning.. But reason no 3? LOL.. guess i can blame you all righthanders out there!

Nah, just joking. I'm fine with doing certain things with my right hand, like playing bowling, writing calligraphy, etc etc. I'm sure those small things won't cause accidents gua..

5 years since 9/11 tragedy.. What do people feel about it now? Are the victims healing? Are muslims still being prejudiced? The blackest moment in history is revisited through windows of memory...

Aiya PX, I read the results of the same study before. Nothing to worry. If we go early, at least we don't have to suffer so much from old-age related disabilities. :) Besides, life expectancy is still going up so we'll still live to a ripe old age barring fatal accidents caused by righties. Plus, if Aubrey de Grey has his way we'll all be immortal so this is gonna be irrelevant! Again, no worries. lol
